BIENNALE D’ART CONTEMPORAIN AUTOCHTONE (BACA)

Biennale d'Art Contemporain Autochtone is a long-term project to recognize and support contemporary Indigenous art and artists.
The Biennale d’Art Contemporain Autochtone is a recurring event, central to Montreal’s artistic scene, highlights a plurality of artistic practices that stem from Indigenous cultures across North America.

The Biennale d’Art Contemporain Autochtone (Contemporary Native Art Biennial) was initiated by the gallery Art Mûr in 2012. In 2018, it has become an independent non-profit organization to better respond to the increasing scale and popularity.

For the 2018 edition, the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective – Collectif des commissaires autochtones (ACC-CCA) has joined with BACA to manage the recruiting of the curators. ACC-CCA is a National Indigenous Arts Service Organization with an 11-year history of support and advocacy for Indigenous curators, artists, and arts professionals within Canada. ACC-CCA’s initiative, the Tiohtià:ke Project, promotes contemporary Indigenous art within and outside the province of Quebec, utilizing Montreal /Tiohtià:ke as the central gathering place, in this way re-visiting the territory’s ancestral role for Indigenous peoples.
